This week, we welcome a man who throws baseballs at unnatural angles and probably oils his in season mustache with the same intensity… Scotty Gillespie.

We’re talking filthy sidearm sliders, elite-level mound swagger, and the aerodynamic advantages of a perfectly sculpted handlebar mustache (science is still out, but vibes are strong). Scotty dives into life on the bump, and whether the mustache will return.

SPEAKER_03

Welcome to episode 41 of Hooked on Fun.

SPEAKER_02

Scotty Green BCJ.

SPEAKER_03

Scott Golespie. Number 26. Siddown, Scotty.

SPEAKER_02

Side down. Scotty G.

SPEAKER_03

Scotty's with us today. Special guest. We had Danny Howitt last episode. We have Scotty today, and who knows we're gonna have tomorrow. Hooked on fun. It is an amazing day today. It is 67 days. You can do it 67 days until the season starts. Um on May 16th against the Guelph Royals. Guelph Royals. There you go.

SPEAKER_02

Well, our homeover said Guelph Royals, but they open the season at Brantford against the room. That's true.

SPEAKER_03

They do that, yes, against the so don't have any players rostered Red Sox. They're working on it. It's gonna come in a big wave, maybe. Anyway, uh warm weather is here. It's been uh awesome the last two days, it's been like 16 degrees. We were actually outside today installing seats, which has been a pain in the ass. And we put our video board on and the music system is live. So if you go by the stadium anytime in the last day or so, since by the time you watch this, that was us belting it out to uh uh Chris Powados, former block-up song.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we have a new music system that I'm still trying to figure out the kinks for.

SPEAKER_03

So yeah, so we'll have some uh not a new sound system to get your panties and a twist here. Um software. Software. So at least that'll be better for Jared or DJ. Uh we got a new inflatable, it's 15 feet tall. Have you seen the picture of it?

SPEAKER_04

I did see the picture of it today. Yeah. So that was that looked good. I I'm kind of disappointed you didn't have it up all day. It's kind of yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Well, it was a little windy. We didn't have it tied down. So we got a nice brand new archway. Um, thank you to the uh inflatable design group out of the States. I don't exactly know where, but somewhere down there. Um, we're gonna have some really cool things when we enter the park this year. It's gonna be pretty sweet.

SPEAKER_02

It's gonna be a fun time.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. Tickets again, talking about it again. They are absolutely flying. Scott, you're gonna have some sold-out crowds for you.

SPEAKER_04

Uh it's gonna be good, you know. It's uh I'm excited to be, you know, just hanging down on the bullpen for the majority of the game while there's a pack crowd.

SPEAKER_03

What about school day game though? Because you've been there for that. Um, we do have that sold out again. As per usual, yeah. Yeah. How do we feel about the school day game?

SPEAKER_04

Uh, school day game, uh, it's great for the kids. Uh and it's great for you, it's great for you, though. It's we'll say it's great for me. It's a lot of screaming. I'll give it that. A lot of screaming. Yeah, this year's meaning a lot. Last year there was no 6'7. No, this year there's gonna be a lot. I think it was happening a lot when we went to the Hamilton school day game last year, but not necessarily ours.

SPEAKER_03

So we do have that back to back. So ours is on the Thursday, theirs on the Friday, and then we also have two exhibition games in Ottawa. Yeah, that'll be fun. Monday, Tuesday. So that'll be fun. Big uh team trip to Ottawa. Who cares what happens during the games? We'd love to win one, but uh, it's gonna be quite the trip. That's all I know. Excited to see a stadium too.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, but it's a cool stadium. Yeah, having played it in four things.

SPEAKER_02

Not for a game, but I've been there. I've never been there. Isn't it supposed to see like 10,000 people?

SPEAKER_03

Yes, it's huge. It's a triple A, it's a former AAA park.

SPEAKER_02

Really?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, for the they had the Ottawa Lynx there before. AAA team.

SPEAKER_02

Were they uh I don't know who they're with? I don't think so.

SPEAKER_03

I have no idea.

SPEAKER_04

I have no idea who they were with, but Montreal still around then?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I guess it would. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Montreal then moved to like the early 2000s.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, that's right. Um, so we're doing that, uh, which would be awesome. Um, we also have oh, we haven't talked about this in the podcast. So our rings came in. No, you can't see them. I saw that post.

SPEAKER_04

I know I'm not gonna be able to see them, but uh I really want to.

SPEAKER_03

They're unbelievable. I've seen the two. Our fan rings are also on their way. Uh those won't be able to be able to get picked up until the 13th, after the 13th of May. And the reason I bring that up is on the 13th of May at Blackburn Brewer, we're having our ring uh presentation party there. So all the players and staff and anybody that was part of the team last year, and actually a bunch of the new guys will also be there, just to obviously be there, we'll get to open their rings and check them out. So it should be super cool.

SPEAKER_04

That's doing it right this year for sure. I like that idea.

SPEAKER_03

Well, it was better. So we'll actually tell the story of what we did when you were there. Um, it was a 2024 season. We kicked off against Barry, and we're discussions were we're gonna do the ring presentation on the field. And at first, we're like, yeah, we'll do it. Then we realized with the amount of players we had returning, that would take forever. So we decided not to do that. And I didn't really have a backup plan. So that night in the locker room, that was uh blistering hot uh because of a it was May, B, uh everybody showered at that point, and it was a steamy mess. We just handed out the rings uh out of a box in the locker room. Not real fancy.

SPEAKER_04

I kind of brought it back to when we uh came home with the trophy in 23, though, and the uh the passing around of the trophy in the clubhouse and on the concourse. So it kind of had a good vibe to it, but it was definitely um awkward.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it was weird. So this will be different. So everybody's gonna get their ring at their table. Um, and then we'll just do, you know, we're gonna have a little bit of uh uh video on the TVs, and then the guys can open it. We're gonna have social media record the whole thing, so you'll see a really cool video of the guys getting their rings and opening it and all that stuff. And anybody that's not returning this year, um, we're actually sending out an invitation for them to come to the party. If they don't, they will get their ring in the mail.

SPEAKER_04

So I'm gonna convince Josh Marquesa to come out.

SPEAKER_03

He better. That would be a good idea.

SPEAKER_04

What is he doing these days, anyway? Honestly, hanging out in Vancouver. I'll miss him. Still coaching?

SPEAKER_03

Yep. He's coaching. Yep. So we'll be doing that, so that'd be pretty cool. We do have our kickoff party the Saturday before that. So that's when you can meet all the new players and get autographs and try our new food and drinks and all that fun stuff. Um, we'll have live music, we'll have batting practice for our kids' club. Uh I'm not throwing it again. You're not throwing it again. Maybe Scotty. Please know. Maybe Scotty.

SPEAKER_02

I beamed a kid the first year.

SPEAKER_03

Actually, I think you're barred from that and and probably kids' camp. No more kids' camp for Scotty, too. Barred. Not kidding.

SPEAKER_04

I was good at the kids' camp. It was just I I paid my dues.

SPEAKER_03

Uh-huh. Yes. That's so funny. It's playing dues. I love the kids' camp. It's awesome. Um everybody's getting arrays this year, so you should jump back on that train. Uh yeah, so we got a lot planned for the preseason. We're actually talking about our production meeting today, um, in the stands in the nice warm weather, the sun. CJ actually did we started in the office, and CJ had 9,000 YouTube clips for us to watch.

SPEAKER_02

So they're all just they're all just songs that that uh they could come out to. Well, I couldn't comprehend what you're trying to tell me on the intro.

SPEAKER_03

It was it was I cannot. I'm trying to find a new player intro song right now. Oh, yeah. I have one in mind, but yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Can I hear what what do you have in mind?

SPEAKER_03

I'm not telling you. We're about to find out day one. The show begins. We are starting something different this year. So instead of just introducing you guys, which will happen separately, we're gonna introduce our characters like Green B and L the Ballpark and Coach Adam and all this stuff, because it is also a show that we put on, apart from the other show on the field. That yeah, we gotta come out.

SPEAKER_02

That uh get ready for this. Jock jams. We're not doing jock jams.

SPEAKER_03

It's not the 90s. Let it go.

SPEAKER_02

It could be it could it could be the 90s.

SPEAKER_03

It's not happening.

SPEAKER_02

I I said we could do a 90s night this year. You said no.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, next topic. WBC. Hey me. I haven't watched any of it, so you gotta talk about it.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I've been watching all of this. Calum's been locked into the two. We bought USA and Mexico played last night, and Matthew Boyd just giving up bombs left and right to Jaron Duran. It was kind of bad.

SPEAKER_03

You know what's crazy? I don't know who either of those people are.

SPEAKER_02

Uh Matthew Boyd plays for the Cubs, so automatically a bomb.

SPEAKER_03

I've probably seen him play.

SPEAKER_02

And then uh Jaron Duran plays for the Red Sox.

SPEAKER_03

And but Boyd had a great season last year.

SPEAKER_02

He did have a really good year. It is March, though. He also was throwing meatballs left and right to Jaron Duran, and Jaron Duran hit him to the moon. But so the Roman Anthony, Roman Anthony got a hold of the room.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it was a back and forth game. I remember seeing that. Speaking of meatballs, yesterday was national meatball day. Yeah. That was good. And then Maddie Borker, Coblox manager, ordered a online a uh uh firehouse sub because he went to Firehouse and he ordered it to the St. Catholic's location and not Welland. So that was funny. Oh Maddie wash a towel. He gets so mad when I told him. Go ahead, sorry.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so fortunately for Maddie. And speaking of meatballs, uh USA plays Italy tonight. Uh that'll be a good one. Yeah, they have a couple White Sox guys on Italy because they just took a bunch of American guys with Italian heritage. White Sox.

SPEAKER_04

Ah, yeah, there's a casual teal. The WBC rules are very interesting because you get to, as far as I know, like you don't have to be a citizen of that country to play. You just have to have someone in your lineage as far back as like grandparents who had citizenship in that country, and you get to play.

SPEAKER_03

So Chisholm has great, great, great, great-grandma.

SPEAKER_02

Well, Bahamas is a uh territory of Britain.

SPEAKER_04

That's kind of like how like all these guys for Netherlands, they all actually grew up in Curaçao, but that's still part of the Netherlands.

SPEAKER_03

Right. Okay. Geography, yep, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. So all these Americans are playing for Italy, and so they're gonna that'll be a good game. DR Venezuela is gonna be fun tomorrow, and then yeah, then it's off to the quarters and semis, and it'll probably be a Japan facing winner of whoever makes it out of the US and Dominican Republic. So I think that's gonna be the semifinal matchup.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I think we gotta. I mean, Canada's still got a chance though. Yeah, they gotta be Cuba. And they have to be, they still have what? They still have to play Puerto Rico and Cuba. Puerto Rico and Cuba, and I think Puerto Rico is the one that lost to no Cuba lost to Puerto Rico.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, with our video board back up and our sound system, it'd be super cool to do a Canada baseball watch party, but the bathrooms aren't operational.

SPEAKER_02

So gotta get on that. Yeah, Cuba do it lost to the PR lost to Puerto Rico. So basically to the Puerto Rico?

SPEAKER_03

The Puerto Rico.

SPEAKER_02

To the Puerto Ricans, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, the Puerto Rico. So I'm calling it now.

SPEAKER_02

So basically they're in already. So and I think Canada's last game is against Cuba.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So they're what basically whoever wins that game moves on because Panama lost to Colombia. So okay. And um that's enough baseball time. Yeah, and now we're going to now we're going into playoff mode for junior B.

SPEAKER_03

We are actually uh official radio sponsor of the Fort Erie Meteors playoff run. Really? Yeah. You'll see our ad during their games.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, it's kind of nice.

SPEAKER_03

That was a good deal.

SPEAKER_04

We do have a lot of people that work for Fort Erie that also. It was a good deal. Oh, too. That's still much more than pretty much any other people. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, true. Yeah, yeah, that's good.

SPEAKER_02

Alex's gonna be calling the games, and I'll be around the game.

SPEAKER_03

Which we will say Alec and Reese are both back. Yeah. Um Reese is actually calling those games for Brantford. There you go. A little rivalry right there. I don't think that Brantford's gonna win. No offense. Uh there, Reese, but I don't think they're that as good as the meteors.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I I think I I hope we win, but uh, it's playoffs. I didn't think it happened. And I but I also like to see us play St. Catharines in the next round because that would be a very good matchup.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. Now, you're probably all asleep from watching to this point because this is gonna epically boring because we talked about baseball. Uh, now we're gonna talk about our good friend beside us, our very special guest, Scotty G. Sidearm Scotty. Scotty, welcome to the podcast. I know you've wanted to come on for a long time. Um long time listener for him. Yes, yeah. All we've had 41, 40 episodes without you, and now we're gonna have one with you. It's the second picture we had for our team in a row now. Yeah. So we have following up Danny Howitt. Danny Howitt. Uh, that one is now live. Uh Scotty, tell us what your life is like or what you do outside of baseball.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, so outside of baseball, um, I still am involved in baseball because I do coach a few days a week. Uh back in Alberta when I used to live there, it was with Absolute Human Performance. And now it's with uh Bulletproof Academy. I'm helping out a couple of their teams there. Um, and then other than that, I do have a degree in education, so I am a teacher. No shit! So I teach the youth, if uh you can believe it, just looking at me and seeing me on the field. Um so yeah, I've got uh been in the process of transferring everything over to Ontario, which uh I did get, but uh yeah, now I'm just waiting on getting a job.

SPEAKER_03

Now I guess the question is um now that you could be part of the school board, do they tell you you can't have Hannibalbar mustaches or how's that gonna play out?

SPEAKER_04

No, I think it's gonna be it'll be okay if I did shave into the handlebar mustache. They would not be, it would definitely be a look to be like, okay, this tea this is a weird teacher for sure.

SPEAKER_03

I think that has to happen. Um, I know that I'm gonna have a beard slash handlebar mustache. It's gonna be thicker in the beard in the mustache, yeah, and then have a beard. Uh that's gonna be my look for the season, I think. I'm gonna go with. I'm just taking my beard. Why don't you let Euclides do your beard again and maybe your hair? Well, I'll he could do it. Not with his hair. A bad mullet for a while.

SPEAKER_02

Euclid's come on. Euclides later touch your hair.

SPEAKER_03

Um, I guess it's a hint. Yes, he's also returning.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so basically, as a question, are you gonna be bringing back your hand of our mustache for the season?

SPEAKER_04

Uh that is up in the air. I haven't quite decided. I know you will, I know what you're deciding for me, but uh, you know, it's definitely happening.

SPEAKER_03

If you don't have a handlebar mustache for for mullet mania night slash long cocks, there's gonna be a lot of things.

SPEAKER_04

I think I'm gonna for those for those games, I think there's gonna have to be an uh an exception, but yes, but uh we'll see what happens, you know, coming into the preseason.

SPEAKER_02

Uh now would would you cut your hair into a mullet for mullet media night?

SPEAKER_04

I mean, yeah, I would just get a fresh shave on the sides. Like I already keep it pretty short on the sides and let it grow up. But yeah, I would just I'd get a I'd get a quick clip on the sides and make it fresh for that night for sure.

SPEAKER_03

Well, we need as much flair out of our players this year as we possibly get, and so that'd be a step in the right direction. Yeah. And from the uh we have our players fill out these uh player information forms, and there's some people on our team this year that have some amazing skills. There's a six foot six pitcher that can do a cartwheel. Can you imagine seeing that thing? Do a cartwheel? Yeah, that's a cartwheel. Six foot six. I don't know if you can tell by looking at me, but I just I don't do cartwheels right now. And you're not six foot six. Yeah, that's true. Um, we also have a guy that can do a backflip, finally. I've been waiting for that for years. Uh do you know that Hupe can juggle?

SPEAKER_04

Do you know that? Uh, you know what? I didn't know that because he's never really shown it off. So hoope, I'm gonna have to see it to believe it, buddy.

SPEAKER_03

So and we're also gonna make you do it with either uh chainsaws or flaming sticks, one of the two. I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

Or palm waters.

SPEAKER_03

Or palm waters, yeah, you could do that. Whatever. Um getting back to you specifically. Uh we know during uh our games you um you it seems like you go through a rhythm to get ready. You're pretty serious about getting ready for the game. Do you have any superstitions pre-game?

SPEAKER_04

Uh superstitions pregame would be like I gotta eat the I don't comb bars. Um no, I don't comb the, I don't call the handle bars, but it comes down to like the pregame food. Like I have to eat the same thing, like same sandwich. So you so our sandwiches from Zeris, you just double one of those up. Yep, one for sure. Uh with with a little protein coffee. You'll be glad to know that Zares told us we can mix and match the sandwiches this year. Oh, fantastic. Just as long as as long as I can get you know a turkey and cheese, then I'm sure I'm gonna watch. Uh uh, let's see, socks have to go up. Like I put on my left sock first and then my right sock. Are you sure? Yeah, left sock and then right sock, but then I put my right shoe on before my left shoe. Okay, wow. Yeah, so that's like I've been doing that for years. I don't know. I just feel like it's something of a comfortability thing for me. But yeah, I did see the uh Brian Sri episode and said that I was a a weird one character. So that's kind of that checks out, I think.

SPEAKER_03

I think all pictures are a little bit odd. We have to be a weird side. Yeah, I think goalie's for hockey. Yeah, I feel like um yeah, we've had some pictures that are a bit odd in our team over the last over the seven years we've been here. Six years I guess compared to a few of them, I think I'm a little more tame.

SPEAKER_02

But you say it's like the weirdest, like the has like the weirdest superstition from all the guys you've been around with.

SPEAKER_04

Oh gosh. Weirdest superstitions that I've seen. Now you're making me think because off the top of my head, I don't exactly like I'm so close.

SPEAKER_03

Just we like just some just some weird shit.

SPEAKER_04

I mean, Caleb Fearstock, he had some weird, was doing some weird things in the past couple of years that made me. Yeah, he does play for the Brantford Red Sox, but uh I mean Chris Ballato was always uh crazy man. He's uh he's one of my closest friends, but he's also well always welcome here. But he is uh yeah, he he'll be the first to say like yeah, he's uh generic lefty pitcher that's just gonna be doing some weird bit of a psycho out there. Yeah, so I liked it. It was good.

unknown

Cool.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, there was always a count on at least a timer on the quickest death bomb you dropped in the middle of a game for sure.

SPEAKER_03

Now, obviously, the pond is uh the pond, it's amazing. We love it, everybody loves being here. Is there another ballpark in this league that you enjoy besides the pond?

SPEAKER_04

Uh I always like going to London. I think on certain game night, like it's gotta be in a great night. Like a Friday night in London is a good crowd, like they're on you. Um, they're never like overly aggressive to you either. It's just kind of in good fun. So I've heard some I've heard some crazy things there, but uh it's for the most part, you don't let it get it on under your skin. And they have they have good crowds on those nights.

SPEAKER_03

Does anybody do it like we do?

SPEAKER_04

No, no, definitely not in the league. Um I mean, Chatham's been trying. I like what I do have a good that I I will say if there was like a 1A, 1B in terms of visiting ballparks, I would say London and Chatham's a good one. Just Chatham set up for the away clubhouses, but really yikes.

SPEAKER_03

Is it in the hockey ring? Yeah, across the parking lot. That's a that's a hike. Yeah, I think they're I think they're doing something there. I don't know. But anyway.

SPEAKER_02

The Chatham ring where the Merrins play?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I don't yeah, I don't know. It's uh I know there's possibility of other new teams coming in. I think their setups are one of their setups is kind of similar, but anyway. Um, I got one for you. You've been here the probably the longest, I guess, besides like I guess Marco, who's been here longer. Um what's your favorite part of Jackfish Game Day? Non non-baseball related, like promo or what we do, or any of that kind of stuff.

SPEAKER_04

I mean, I'm always gonna love the donut race. I think that's always gonna be really good. Um Dizzy Bet is always gonna be up there for me. Like watching the Dizzy Bet, and especially, you know, uh shout out to uh Shank for being the one to tell them he's a referee. Yeah, being the good referee that he is and making sure they're super dizzy by the end of it. Um it provides some great entertainment for the five.

SPEAKER_03

I am surprised with that one. No one's ever puked doing it. So we've done it a over a couple hundred times.

SPEAKER_02

I've had people who I asked to play, and they're like, nah, I've already started drinking, I'm gonna puke. I'm like, okay.

SPEAKER_03

That's fair.

SPEAKER_04

Well, that's kind of respect to those fans, you know, like they know their limits.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, they stay within it. Yeah, um, yeah, we've been lucky that that sense people don't really get too crazy. We don't sell any like mixed drinks here, like we do in a can, but we don't like you can't go get a rum and coke or like a vodka seven, but it doesn't have a rare shot.

SPEAKER_04

That's probably a good thing.

SPEAKER_03

We're never gonna sell that stuff. That's a good thing.

SPEAKER_02

Pre-game shots of fireball sounds fun.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know what you're talking about. Um, we do the sushi vodka's though, those are good. Yeah, um copper roses or vodka here, which is very good.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, do you have a uh a least favorite promo that we've done over the years?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, what do you hate that we do?

SPEAKER_04

Oh, that's a tough one because I think all of the promos are solid. We're adding more. Like, uh are we talking about like in-game?

SPEAKER_03

Doesn't matter because there's anything we do that's like not like playing baseball. Something you're like, oh shit, they're doing this again. I hate this. Like you can't tell me you love when we come say, hey Scotty, let's go hand out some flowers. You want to punch us in the throat. Let's be honest here.

SPEAKER_04

Well, yeah, because the only one I want to hand it to is my girlfriend. Yes, I understand that.

SPEAKER_03

But what's a nice old 80-year-old lady?

SPEAKER_04

I mean, yeah, the it would be it's just I do I do like to think like look, if we're on the field, like uh we're on the bench and everything, like that's kind of our time, and like pulling us out is is a little bit tough, but I totally get it for you. Yeah, so I I know we're never gonna I know it's never gonna go away, but yeah, that's um I I just like staying on the field level during the game.

SPEAKER_03

Um I do find it funny when we do the uh flower thing. I remember a couple guys over the years like, oh, I don't know if I can do it, like my girlfriend's here. I was like, You're giving it to like a 50-year-old, 60-year-old lady. Like, I don't think your girlfriend's gonna give it a care. And he's like, No, I can't do it. So it's pretty ridiculous. I won't tell you who it was, but it doesn't matter. But then we probably you're probably getting the wrong person. I'm just saying.

SPEAKER_02

I've had explain it, I had explained it three times to a guy my first year here. Won't say one say names, he was in the league last year, but he I explained to him three times. You're just handing him the flowers, and you're gonna smile and take a picture, and then you go. Back down. So I mean sometimes they it does give a little hard. Yeah, I don't know.

SPEAKER_04

You have to remember we're not the brightest people in the world. No. So I know it's shocking to hear. We're not the brightest people in the world. So you will have to repeat yourself a few times.

SPEAKER_03

Um I just find it funny that um over the years is people are shocked when you ask me to do really stupid things because that's yeah, I don't know, that's just who we are. So it's it's always kind of funny, like uh, I don't want to do that. Well, you probably on the wrong team then. Anyway, just so you know, we're gonna be asking you guys to do some stupid shit. Not during the game, but maybe this is a flower thing, not during that damn thing, but talk TikTok, social media videos, all that kind of stuff. Yeah, we're gonna. And that's happened every year, though. Yeah, but we're gonna ramp it up this year. We didn't really ask you guys like we didn't do any interviews with you guys, we didn't do nothing. So this year we're we're gonna do a lot. I got some good ideas from Media Day this year.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, yeah, Media Day is Media Day was a good one last year. I did have fun with that. Because I remember last year it was you, Ben, and Danny. Yeah, me and Danny were hugging Ben's legs. Yes, we're gonna do more of that. We're more gap kids photos. We want them. I like I think those are really funny. Those are becoming very popular with like every team that I do too. So it's like it's great.

SPEAKER_02

Um if there is one thing you can add to a jackfish game day to make it better in your eyes, like odd non-baseball thing, what would you say we can do better?

SPEAKER_03

We could be promos, food, drinks, decoration, theme nights, anything.

SPEAKER_04

Bring out the bring out the uh cannon more tissue, whatever it may be, shirts, undies, doesn't matter.

SPEAKER_03

Use it three times this year. We're gonna be using it for t-shirts, using it for plush balls. No, because you just explored, we tried. I just explored the hot dog.

SPEAKER_02

Plush balls, we tried it with the Twinkies, and we just figured, okay, yeah, the hot dogs and nothing survives.

SPEAKER_03

And we're gonna do underwear again. So that'll be happening.

SPEAKER_04

Underwear is good, especially if a fan doesn't really understand that it's omnies coming at them and they have no idea.

SPEAKER_03

Like, what kind of ladies? Their first time, they're like, I got a t-shirt, uh, I got fruit of the loom under. They didn't kiss the fish, but they got a pair of omies. It's a yeah, like it's uh kiss the fish is an iconic, it's never leaving. It's never leaving. No, that has to stay. Yeah, we gotta find fish somewhere though. Last year we got it from MT bellies after their uh East Coast kitchen party. We got three of them, so now we gotta find it from somewhere else.

SPEAKER_02

We gotta go to like pork over to some sort of fishing village to find it.

SPEAKER_03

We should just go fishing. You can yourself. No, I don't know. No, we should do we should get uh ball boy Connor and his dad out on the lake to catch us a fish. Yeah, three of them. We need three. Fernando called one too, didn't he? I gotta find out he I think he's gonna he's coming back as the ball boy or bat boy. I don't know. Maybe he's going out of it. Who knows?

SPEAKER_04

Fernando, if you're watching this, which Fernando, you're coming back. You have no choice.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, apparently. I would love to learn him back. I just I haven't talked to him yet. So we'll find out. Um yeah, I don't know. What do you what are you looking forward to for the season? Besides the ring.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, um, I'm looking forward to just like hopefully overall competitionally just being better better now that we're officially professional, which is pretty cool. Um, you know, I got lucky enough to play this game after college for like five. Now it's gonna be going into year five, and you know, to be at a professional level is really cool.

SPEAKER_03

So do you want to dive into uh your life after college? You came to the jackfish. Yeah. And then now you live here.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, yeah. How's that how that happened? So yeah, when I um when I graduated college, or at least was done playing college ball, I ended up going to the Frontier League tryout and draft and got picked up out of there. Um, and then when I got released from Ottawa, I came here and just immediately fell in love with the region. Like that was awesome. We started playing, I gelled with the guys from day one. Yeah. Um, and even though I got picked up for by Toire VR later that season, like it was for me, it was no, okay, I'm gonna come back here. If I'm never playing, if I'm not playing Frontier League Ball, I want to play in this town. Um, and so I already like from that point made my plan of like I want to move out here at some point. So everything was kind of geared towards I'm gonna get the finish my degree, do one more year at home to make some money to actually live here, and then uh move out there. And then, you know, I met my girlfriend uh a couple years ago in 2023, and that kind of sped up the process.

SPEAKER_03

I cannot wait to go to that wedding. So excited. Umk wink. Yeah, no, that's quite honestly though, that's like that's like our dream. Like when we started this team, we thought about like if guys come from other places and fall in love with Niagara, which how can you not? The place like it was amazing. And I I love Welling. People actually just saw a social media video from a real estate agent uh who was a sponsor of ours saying that like Welling gets a bad rap, which is true, yeah, but it shouldn't. There's no reason for it. Like it's a beautiful city, anyway. Um, to have yourself, Jonah now, yeah. Um, you know, that's uh that's two uh that we've had uh Danny mentioned he's trying to come back here. Danny's trying to move back here. So it's kind of cool because the thing right now with Niagara is we don't have a lot of homegrown talent. So to have guys like yourselves in town is awesome.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I mean, like I you're right, like Welland gets sometimes gets a bad rap. There's a lot of hidden gems in this town. Like it's super cool. Yeah. Um, and then yeah, just living in like I live in Thorold technically, but it's still like oh that's crazy. But yeah, uh it's it was kind of like a dream come true.

SPEAKER_03

Like, make sure you get out here and be closer to Welland was yeah, I think a lot of the guys that come to play here is I mean, some I mean some like home, but um they fall in love with the region because it's it's I mean, I'm a researcher for Burlington, so like uh coming down here, like the people are amazing, um, the support you get is amazing, uh, all that kind of stuff. Like, you think about we talked about this hundred tons of every episode. Like some of our fans, Susie, you know, Susie. Yep, and um and a bunch of others, like they're like family now, and that's just the way this region is. It's really cool.

SPEAKER_04

So there's like, yeah, I've got like a couple, there's uh a couple of fans that have bought a lot of my jerseys. And when they met Eden, uh they were like asking her all about me, like what like kind of whatever thing I was doing, which was kind of very interesting, it was very cool. But yeah, she she got uh introduced to the idea of like they I actually like us players actually have certain people who are are dedicated fans, was very uh interesting.

SPEAKER_03

Well, I wish like I wish someone would start a booster club again for the for the players. Uh we also can't do it. So if anybody out there wants to start a booster club or in full support, uh what is a booster club? It uh it supports the players for anything they need uh, you know, during their time playing for the team. If it's I don't know, spitballing uh TV for their uh apartment or some food here and there or you know, goodies on the bus to go on a long road trip, fun stuff like that. Nothing real crazy. Um and usually a booster club is what it is. It's a pub. It's a social club, and they hang out and talk about a jackfish, support the guys.

SPEAKER_02

Now I got one final question. You are known around here as a very much of an avid golfer. Yep. What is your favorite golf course in the region?

SPEAKER_04

Probably Whirlpool. That is like up there is like one of my favorite courses I've ever played.

SPEAKER_02

What's your favorite? Is it the one is it the glow and dark one in uh falls you? It is. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

That's about my golf uh game.

SPEAKER_04

Whirlpool is I probably I've played almost every course around this region, and it's I actually did play the Whirlpool, but only in the top.

SPEAKER_02

Uh I haven't been to Whirlpool yet. I played Pen Lake since the time right now. That was really nice.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, I I might even switch Mancus because I got lucky enough to play Lookout Point one day this past summer with uh Hupe and uh that was kind of set up by you guys. It was pretty pretty sweet. Wow, but uh it was that one was um that one was peak for just like condition, but in terms of course that I could play any day, Whirlpool is yeah, unbelievable.

SPEAKER_03

Well, do you want to go to the experience the end of our podcast with CJ movie reviews? I actually saw a movie this time. Yes, that's good.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's called Hoppers. It's the new Pixar movie that came out. Oh yeah, that has like a beaver, it's basically Avatar, but with beavers.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Um, but it was really good. I liked it. Very nice, very funny, very cute, good way of telling people leave the animals alone.

SPEAKER_04

So that's the one with the uh viral lizard, right?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, the lizard, lizard, lizard, lizard, lizard, lizard, and the video board.

SPEAKER_03

Right trying to find like just ridiculous memes put on the video board for any situation or yeah, yeah. Um, I didn't watch a movie, but I finished Bridgerton.

SPEAKER_02

How was that? That's nice.

SPEAKER_03

That was good, it was very good.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, you can be honest with us.

SPEAKER_03

It was hot.

SPEAKER_04

I uh there's some stuff. I started watching Game of Thrones for the first time. Oh and I'm already on of all, I started what a few weeks ago, maybe a month ago, and I'm halfway through the last season right now. Really? Yeah, so that was uh that's been a pretty intense ride. I know. It's a great show, isn't it? Yeah, that's probably top show of mine.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's it's my favorite show of all time, too. Just letting you know it you're just prepared to let down in this final season. Why do you gotta fuck with him on that? That's uh yeah. Hey, I I watched this live. I waited, I watched all eight seasons from when it came out on HBO and I waited all that time for the final season and then it came out. Have you finished shrinking? I've I'm caught off of shrinking. Like I oh, it's not finished yet.

SPEAKER_03

I've heard I gotta watch that show. Oh, it's on new. I've heard it's unbelievable.

SPEAKER_02

It's a new episode tomorrow.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, so I I have not caught up yet. Yeah, um, I don't know where I'm at actually.

SPEAKER_02

I'm caught up right now. I I like I really like it. It's a really good season.

SPEAKER_03

It is a really, really good uh show. Yeah, it's funny very hardfelt, very funny. It would be actually super funny if you were high as fuck, watched that. It would be.

SPEAKER_02

No, my friend, I went to my friend's house and she watched she watched the same thing. I was not giving you anything called Kunk on Earth. You ever see that show? No, earth? That show's funny. Uh, watching that show high would be pretty funny too because it's just well I once watched uh Life in Pieces.

SPEAKER_03

That you're watched that see that show.

SPEAKER_02

So from like the Tom Hanks sign.

SPEAKER_03

No, no, no, no. It's recent, more recent. Okay. But watch that, it's absolutely hilarious. And I watched that uh uh with I ate some gummies, yeah, and I it was the funniest shit I've ever seen in my life. I still think it's the funniest thing in the world. It's like real life things, but like it was elevated by the gummies. It was next level. My wife and I just on the couch. Before I had kids, though.

SPEAKER_02

Thanks for showing.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah, we actually uh I don't know why I'm on this topic. CJ's been trying to, since it's been so nice outside, CJ's been trying to do get me to do office beers. But I'm on a it's I'm gonna not even St. Patrick's Day.

SPEAKER_02

No, that's next week. Okay. Next Tuesday. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, maybe always be inside night.

SPEAKER_04

But like okay, we'll figure it out. We'll get some green. Like the Chicago, yeah, the Chicago kid is living for next Tuesday. All right. He needs he needs something. Yeah, okay.

SPEAKER_02

Do you know like what we do in Chicago on St. Paddy's side?

SPEAKER_04

I've seen the I've seen the the fish wake up and get absolutely rattled by how green the river is.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we just all just pour a bunch of mountain dew in the river and then it turns green.

SPEAKER_03

It's not mountain dew, it's die.

SPEAKER_02

It's die. It's for sure die. It's die.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I've seen it. Yeah, it's and it didn't chase put like ducks in the river or something like that.

SPEAKER_02

That's yeah, the rubber ducky race. There's that's in the summer, like in June. All that money goes towards Special Olympics.

SPEAKER_03

Oh cool. Yeah, we're actually thinking about doing a marathon around a marathon. I mean a 5k here. A 5k, a 5k.

SPEAKER_02

Are we doing a dodgeball tournament too?

SPEAKER_03

Oh, we're playing one. Yeah. Yeah, we need a team, we need some, we need some members.

SPEAKER_02

I saw Danny play dodgeball against some kids and he was yucking the ball. And these kids are like eight, nine, ten years old.

SPEAKER_04

I will say one of my favorites is to be have playing dodgeball in gym, like when I'm teaching, and just uh occasionally step into the game and you know. Just yeah, just a couple, like I've no one's watching those. I've had uh just keep it below the neckline. Okay. So that I I respect the I respect the rules of the game still. That's fair. Can't just abandon that.

SPEAKER_03

On that note, uh, we should probably stop you guys and stop talking now, uh, to uh not ruin any future plans.

SPEAKER_02

Um but to close it off though, is there anything you want to say to the fans?

SPEAKER_04

Uh can't wait for all your support this summer. Uh you guys are the best fans in the league by far. Best fans in Ontario. Can't wait to uh can't wait to uh see you guys out at the field this summer and hopefully go back to back here.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, I'd love to be the first CBL champions. All right. That is episode 41 of Hooked on Fun with Scotty G side, Scotty. I'm Director Fun Robbins.
